My current natural hair care regimen varies from day to day it is difficult for me, so I try to keep it simple. In terms of products I typically avoid all silicones, alcohols, and parabens.
My focus is to keep my hair moisturized so I try to avoid any ingredients that lead to dryness. When in doubt I rely heavily on the Ingredients Dictionary to make decisions regarding which ingredients to avoid. I definitely would say don’t be afraid to try new products. There is a reason for my “crazy” I have never had a perm but I have never been able to grow my hair past shoulder length.
So when I began my journey almost 3 years ago I decided to focus on using all natural hair products and avoid using heat.
So my focus has been to keep my hair in its natural state and use natural products in an effort to retain length. I will say in the past 1 years I have not seen as much length retention as I would have liked but I attribute that too my own inconsistencies with my regimen. My current focus now is to keep my hair in protective styling primarily wigs and to focus on moisturizing regularly.
Detangle hair using a modified denman brush before washing using conditioner. During my detangling session I braid my hair into 4-6 sections. Keeping the braids really loose at the roots (mainly braiding the ends of my hair). This just makes it easier for my to wash my hair. I have found that when I wash my hair while in braids it prevents my hair from tangling. Product used Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner (the ORS always leaving my curls popping) or Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner.
Wash hair with shampoo every 2 weeks. I occasionally cowash in between but only if my hair feels extremely dry. I do not use conditioner on my scalp only on the length of my hair this prevents me from having scalp product build up. Product used Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo (I prefer the Tea Tree Tingle I feel that the Nourish sometimes leaves my hair feeling striped) or Trader Joes Nourish Spa Shampoo.
Condition hair before I washing during the detangling section and condition hair again following 2 application of shampoo. Again I only apply the conditioner to the ends of my hair. Product used Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner (I prefer the Tea Tree Tingle) or Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner (Shea Moisture can also be used as a leave in but I have found it leaves your hair with white residue. I don’t plan to repurchase this product).
Deep Condition once a month typically I will DC before I wash my hair basically I just leave the conditioner from my detangling session in overnight. My GOAL is to deep condition every 2 weeks to better moisturize my hair. I plan to start deep conditioning after washing my hair. I’m interested in seeing if that would be more moisturizing. Product used Nubian Heritage Evoo & Moringa Repair & Extend Conditioner this has been my staple deep conditioner. But I do plan to purchase Protein Treatments because I have experienced some breakage and heat damage from having my hair straightened at the salon. I recently purchased Nubian Heritage Indian Hemp & Tamanu Grow & Strength Treatment Masque as a light protein treatment.
Moisturize hair using a water based moisturizer after washing it during the styling process in which I typically braid my hair. Product used Giovanni Direct Leave In Conditioner (very light moisturizer). Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk (typically I apply this before using a styler and this is a great refresher if your hair feels dry). My favorite styler is Carol’s Daughter Marguerite’s Magic Hairdress Restorative Cream Hairdress it is very thick and creamy but it can be difficult to saturate my hair using it so I am on the look out for a new product. I am hoping to purchase some new products during Black Friday. I also use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and I typically couple it with Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle because the smoothie has no hold and my hair tend to get puffy if I use it by itself.
Sealing after I have braided and moisturized my hair I seal it with a homemade oil mixture. My GOAL is to lightly seal my hair everyday following refreshing. Product used Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Safflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Vitamin E mix.
Refresh my hair typically every 3 days with hair milk or a water mixture. My GOAL is to refresh my hair everyday to ensure it is moisturized. Product used Water, Aloe Vera Gel, Castor Oil, and Glycerin mix (I do not use glycerin on my hair when its cold outside because it leaves my hair feeling sticky).
Trimming I try to trim when I notice my ends looking dead (mainly when they aren’t the same texture as the rest of my hair). Typically I can tell my hair needs a trim if I am having a lot of knots, split ends, and the comb tends to get stuck at the end of my hair.
Straightening When I do straighten my hair I stretch it first by doing four twist and pinning them. Once my hair is dry I then blow dry my hair on low heat. Then I straightened my hair doing only one pass typically I end up Bantu knotting it.Product used Generic Value Product Thermal Protection Spray.
